Chocolate Buttercream Frosting

Chocolate Buttercream Frosting

This chocolate buttercream is rich, chocolatey, and not too sweet. Use a 1M cake decorating tip to make fun chocolate cupcakes or smoothly spread on a chocolate layer cake for a classy celebration.

Ingredients

1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature
3 cups powdered sugar
1/2 cup cocoa powder
2 teaspoons vanilla
1/4 cup milk, or to desired consistency
1/4 teaspoon Diamond kosher salt (or 1/8 teaspoon table salt)

Instructions

1
Cream the softened butter in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment.
2

Add the remaining ingredients and mix until fluffy and well blended, occasionally scraping down the sides of the bowl. Add an additional splash of milk if necessary to obtain an easily spreadable consistency.

3

Covers one 9 X 13, two 9 inch rounds, or 24 cupcakes.

This is meant to be a rich, “not so sweet” frosting. The high ratio of cocoa to sugar may be a little less forgiving of lower quality cocoa, so IF the end result tastes a little more bitter than “rich”, add more butter, powdered sugar, and/or milk to attain the balance of flavors that appeals to you.
